It’s that time again in Colorado when our trees are dropping leaves like rain drops.  My front yard is covered with dead leaves which have fallen from my crab apple tree.  So what do we do with all these leaves other than throw them in the trash?
 
If you enjoy your summer garden, put those dead leaves to good use.  They make wonderful mulch and will work throughout the winter to make your garden rich next spring. 
 
First, rake the leaves into a big pile.  If you have a leaf shredder, use that to shred them into smaller sizes.  If not, run over them with a bagless mower to shred them. 
 
Now that you have a nice pile of shredded leaves, simply cover your cleaned out garden area and work them into the soil a bit.  This is a good time to add a slow-release nitrogen fertilizer.  This will help the leaves decompose. 
 
Now your garden is ready for whatever Old Man Winter brings its way.
