Potato King of Colorado
Dad Rufus H. "Potato" Clark was once known as the Potato King of Colorado.  In 1859 he farmed on what is today the Highlands Ranch Golf Club.  Colorado farmers had success with growing potatos and Mr. Potato's first harvest was so abundant he became known as Colorado's Potato King.\
Once a home to nomadic tribes including the Cheyenne and Arapaho, and later sprawling cattle ranch, Highlands Ranch has grown into one of the most successful master-planned communities in the West.  The first homes were built in 1981 and since then the community has grown to offer a range of housing options.  
An interesting sale of events for "Highlands Ranch".  Phipps family bought the ranch in 1937 for $250, Lawrence Phipps, Jr. died in 1976 and the ranch was sold to Marvin Davis for more than $13 million.  He re-sold the property in 1978 to Mission Viejo Company, which had a vision of a master planned community.  
Highlands Ranch Metro District maintains 22 parks, 4 off-leash dog areas, 70 miles of hiking and biking trails, and 2,200 acres of natural open space areas; in fact, the majority of homes are located a short walk from a park, open space, or trail.
