We have a very cool newspaper in town called the Carlsbad Retrospect, a bimonthly publication featuring stories and news from Carlsbad's past, as well as old advertisements. It really is a walk back in time in our town and fun to see prices, the things that were happening in town in the past, and photos of some of the old (and in some cases gone) buildings.
 
 
Here are a few newsworthy items from the Jan./Feb. 2016 addition:
 
In 1930 the population was approaching 2000 (it's about 116,000 today)
 
1952 the voters voted to make Carlsbad a City!
 
Thieves stole a bunch of flour and sugar from the Santa Fe Train Depot in 1917
 
Delicious dinners could be had at the Royal Palms Inn for $2.00 with a special Roast Turkey Plate for only $1.35
 
Tourists raelly like Carlsbad's mineral waters (a 1927 article proclaimed) - the original mineral water was discovered around 1884 by John A. Frazier (you can still buy mineral water at a kiosk on the main road at Alt Karlsbad - bring your own jug)
 
The NEW Carlsbad Mineral Spring Hotel opened May 24, 1930
 
A new barbershop chair was added to better accommodate patrons in 1926
