Singing the Egg Song
When I was a little girl, my Grandmother had a very large farm in northern Pennsylvania. We would visit for a few weeks each summer and "help" with the farm jobs. One of my favorites was feeding the chickens and searching for eggs. When one of the chickens would sing what she called the "egg song," Grandma would tell me to go check the coop and, sure enough, there was always an egg or two waiting for me. It's not a tremendous surprise that I find myself with some suburban chickens these days.
I've done a bit of research on the care and raising of chickens and I expected our first eggs around August or September. A few weeks ago, I was eating lunch in the kitchen and I heard one of the chickens making a ruckus. Forty years since my adventures as a farm assistant but I recognized the egg song immediately! My first thought was that it was a coincidence - surely there isn't a particular song chickens sing when they lay eggs?
