Robert Abbe
Robert Abbe was born in New Your City back in 1851. He received his education at the College of the City of New York and Columbia University receiving his MD in 1874. From 1877 and 1884 he served as surgeon and professor of surgery at the New York Hospital and the New York Babies Hospital. He is credited with the (lip switch flap), I’ve looked this up and found it interesting just before breakfast….
Anyway onward we go. The plastic surgical laboratory at St. Luke’s Hospital in New York is named for him. He lectured on the subject of surgery and was a fellow of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia as well as being Vice-President of the Academy of Medicine. He treated Marie Curie and has many photos of her during her treatment with radium. He introduced the practice of using radiation to treat cancer having founded the science of radiation oncology.
He was a vigorous opponent of the use of tobacco. In his spare time, he started collecting Native American artifacts, realizing the need for safe permanent storage. He amassed a sizeable collection which now can be seen at “The Abbe” one of the first museums built in Maine. The museum ... more
