Matthews is a fast-growing town in Mecklenburg County, southeast of Charlotte, known for its vibrant downtown and historic commercial district. The town’s central business district dates back to the 1870s, when hardware stores and banks sprang up along the stagecoach line between Charlotte and Monroe. Trains replaced the stagecoaches in 1874, and the farms that produced cotton across the area diminished in number.
Today, the town’s largest employers include Windstream Communications, PCA International, Conbraco, Presbyterian Hospital and Family Dollar headquarters. Matthews’ population has grown to more than 29,000, and its town limits now encompass 17 square miles. There are hotels, restaurants, shopping centers, recreational facilities and a hospital.
But Matthews is known for (and loved for) its festivals. Residents look forward each year to the Easter Eggstravaganza, Summer Concert Series, Matthews Alive! festival, Auto Reunion car show, ArtFest, Halloween carnival and Hometown Holidays. The Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resource Department offers service, leisure programs and activities, parks and greenways. And get a dose of culture at the McDowell Arts Center, with its art-related classes and programs, as well as gallery space.
