Hurricane Season - stay prepared
We're half-way through a relatively quiet hurricane season here in the Tampa Bay area and it's easy to forget that we still have until November 30th to be free and clear. Back in May of this year the prediction was for an "average" hurricane season - average number of named storms, average strength, average likelihood they'll make landfall. What's keeping it average? First, the weakening El Niño (warmer-than-normal water in the Pacific Ocean) and second, cooler water in the northern Atlantic Ocean. Tampa Bay for the most part is enjoying an unprecedented dry spell - it's been 12 years since hurricanes Charley, Frances and Jeanne battered Central Florida in a six week time period starting in late August. While the Tampa Bay area missed the full impact of the storms, there were still the high winds and storm surges to contend with.  To that point - it doesn't take a full blown hurricane to wreak damage - tropical storms - even those that never make landfall can still cause surges and resulting flooding.
