Sears Catalog Homes: Thinking Outside the Box

Sears Roebuck and Company sold 70,000 mail order kit homes in 370 different designs to families throughout North America and Canada between 1908-1940.
These kits were shipped in railroad cars and were assembled by the homeowner, relatives, friends, and neighbors similar to to a barn raising by farm families. In some cases Sears provided contractor services to assemble the home.
In 1912 Sears began to offer mortgage financing. The least expensive model was $1,000 and the most expensive was $4,400.00. Financing was for 5-15 years at interest rate of 6%-7%.
You can identify a Sears Catalog home by looking in unfinished basements. There lumber and framing were  stamped with letters or numbers.
I often think about make home ownership more affordable. So  here is my ideas. Bring back Sears Catalog Kit home designs and have them assembled by low income families, friends, neighbors, with assistance from local contractors like Habitat for Humanity.
Now This would be an Ideas that is literally thinking Outside the Box.
