Edward Perkins
Edward Perkins was born in Dorchester, Massachusetts back in 1856 to William and Ellen.  Shortly after his birth his mother died so he was raised by a shoemaker and his wife in Abington, Massachusetts until he was 4 where his paternal Grandfather Walter took him in.  he attended a private school and entered Harvard College in 1874.  In 1880 he received his PhD in history, his thesis was on the Louisiana Purchase.  His grandfather died the same year leaving him an inheritance of $300.00.  with the landfall, he took a nine-month tour of Europe.
When he returned, he wrote articles for Science Magazine about the Sudan and geography-instruction at German schools.   In 1883, he became an instructor of history at Harvard University.  In 1883 he received a prize of $150.00 for his work on “Town and Country Government in the English Colonies of North America”. 
BTW you may be familiar with him if I told you the rest of his name.  For you see I’m writing about Edward Perkins Channing.  He was an American historian and author of the monumental History of the United States in six volumes.  For this publication, he won the 1926 Pulitzer Prize for History.  His research made ... more
