When you buy a new construction home you get to pick the cabinets, flooring, paint color, finishes, fixtures. You can go with the builder basics to keep costs down, or you can choose upgrades. All the decisions can be overwhelming. On the other hand, it can be a lot of fun "customizing" all of these things to make the house you are buying in to your HOME.
When we bought our first new construction home (now we are experienced, we've done this twice), we didn't do very many upgrades. We went very basic. Oak cabinets. Beige carpeting (with an upgraded pad). Vinyl flooring in the kitchen and bathrooms. White walls, doors and trim. Brass fixtures. (It was the 80s.)
We didn't upgrade the countertops, we went with the laminate that was offered, but we picked out color. BLUE. Can you imagine? We both loved BLUE and decided to be bold. The counters in the kitchen and the downstairs powder room were BLUE. We were Realtors in those days and we didn't think about resale.
Fast forward. We've decided to sell our house with the BLUE countertops. Guess what we are reading in the feedback? We found out, not everyone likes BLUE as ... more
