Richard Warren was born in Stewartville
Richard Warren was born in Stewartville, Minnesota back in 1863 to James and Eliza. At a very young age you found him working for the railroad after learning telegraphy. In 1880 he was working in North Branch, Minnesota for the Minneapolis and St. Louis Railway.
He transferred to Minneapolis where he became a station agent. Inn 886 at the tender age of 23 his life changed forever. Shipment of gold watches was refused by a Minnesota retailer. a common scam was for wholesalers to ship products to retailers who had not ordered them (sound familiar)?   However, Richard jumped at the opportunity agreeing with the wholesaler to give them $12.00 for each watch he sold and anything over that he kept as profit. They agreed and within 6 months he had netted $5,000.00, a hefty sum in those days. He moved to Chicago in 1887 and opened a watch company where he hired Alvah a watch repairman.
In 1893 he published his first catalog that catalog was of course the brainchild of Richard Warren Sears and his first employee of course was Alvah Curtis Roebuck. The company incorporated in 1895 as Sears Roebuck & Company. He retired in 1908 and died in 1914 in ... more
