Houston? Come in Houston... Happy Moon (Landing) Day!
On July 11th, 1969 the Apollo 11 was launched into space from the Cape Kennedy Space Center. Nine days later this same vessel landed on the surface of another planet 238,900 miles away... THE MOON! It was on July 20th, 1969 that the first steps were taken outside of Apollo 11 and on to the ground of the Moon. During this time, everyone down on Earth stood still as they waited to hear if the brave astronauts had managed to successfully do interplanetary travel. By doing this feat, the United States was put ahead of Russia in the Cold War, and made a mark that opened new possibilities for the entire human race.
It was because of this historical event that today, July 20th, is known as Moon Day!
If you're looking to find a way to celebrate this day, try popping in a movie about space travel! I highly recommend the 2016 film Hidden Figures if you're looking for a story about how we managed to make it to the moon while feeling inspired by the amazing women of color behind it.
