1733 - John Winthrop was granted the first honorary Doctor of Law Degree given by Harvard College in Cambridge, MA.
1861 - The first major battle of the U.S. Civil War began with the Battle of Bull Run at Manassas Junction, VA. The Confederates won the battle.
1873 - Jesse James and the James Younger Gang stage the first successful train robbery in the American Old West of the Rock Island Lines at Adair, Iowa. The total amount secured by the robbers was $2,337. (pictured above)
1925 – The Scopes "Monkey Trial" ended in Dayton, TN. John T. Scopes was convicted and fined $100 for violating the state ban on teaching Darwin's theory of evolution because it challenged the bible. The conviction was later overturned on a legal technicality because the judge had set the fine instead of the jury.
1930 - The Veterans Administration of the United States was established.
1949 - The U.S. Senate ratified the North Atlantic Treaty, the treaty establishing NATO by a vote of 82 – 13.
