Danger Will Robinson...
Danger Will Robinson…

The other day I received what looked like a bank statement from Capital One. It had my name, Larry’s name, our address, and a small 4 digit dollar amount in the account.

I don’t have a Capital One account.  I don’t need one, and certainly don’t need another account of any kind.

But, could one of my previous accounts have changed names and I’d forgotten?

But...the account numbers didn’t look quite right to me...not long enough and no hyphens.

I called the number on the statement and the recording asked for the first four digits of my SS number followed by the # sign. I gave them some random numbers off the top of my head.
Then it asked for my zip code.

That’s when I hung up.

What I did next was look up Capital One and call them directly.
They could not find any account. The representative also said that they don't ask for the first 4 digits of a Social Security number but the last 4. Think about it...these days people will verify your account using your last 4 digits. If you give someone your first 4 then all they have to do is randomly insert 1 number ... more
