New Orleans Historic Creole Cottages in French Quarter

                               Historic Creole Cottages
     1790-1840

    New Orleans Homes

Creole Cottages were built along the Gulf Coast when Spain and France had the area as colonies. New Orleans French Quarter is the one place that had the cottages built close to the ground and right on the street. The majority of the homes were 1.5 stories with 4 rooms down and bedrooms up. The four rooms down were all square with a kitchen in the courtyard that was a separate building. No kitchen in the house.      Most of the units were built of plaster and stucco. None in the French Quarter were set pback or had porches like cottages in rural areas. There is a few in the Marigny across Esplanade but the majority are in the Quarter. A few may be in Treme close to the Quarter.      I know of no other area city in the United States that has homes like these cottages that were built in the early 19th century. Most of the cottages in the French Quarter are in the more residential areas. Love the shutters, multi doors, chimneys, and ... more
