7 tips to keep your home's pipes from freezing with the Charlotte, NC metro area experiencing frigid temperatures for the past week and more days of them to still come. I've been seeing lots of posts on my community newsletter from neigbors asking how what to with frozen pipes. As any Charlottean knows, this is not typical weather for us and it's easy to forget to take some precautions to ensure that your pipes don't freeze and burst. Here are  tips to help you keep your pipes from freezing and causing expensive damage to your home:

Open your kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors to allow warmer air to circulate around the plumbing during the night (especially where you might have pipes next to an exterior wall).
Set your thermostat  to stay at same temperature during the day and at night. And even if you are away from your home, make certain that the thermostat is set to no lower than 55 degrees, but it's recommended you keep the temperature constant at 68 degrees or higher. And consider turning off your water completely if you won't be at home, especially the valves to your clothes ... more
