Where Everybody Knows Your Name
It's not the bar from the Cheers TV show, but you'll find a similar familiarity at the Addison Athletic Club in Addison, Texas.
 
"The club" as some locals call it, is open only to Addison residents and employees of the Town of Addison. Membership costs only $10, a one-time fee, but you must provide proof of residency on a yearly basis.
    
Some of the amenities include racketball courts, indoor and outdoor pools; exercise equipment including treadmills, rowers, bikes, steppers, free weights and circuit stations; an indoor banked track; basketball courts; aerobics studio; whirlpool, steam rooms, and saunas. Across the street from the club are sand volleyball courts, a tennis court, and a children's playground. With 55,000 square feet inside, there's plenty of room.
There are currently about 3700 members. On the busiest days, the club welcomes approximately 400 members. There's usually little or no wait time for the equipment.
I'm a morning person, so I exercise in the mornings, about the same time each time I go. There's a regular group at this hour and even if we're not on a first name basis (although many of us are), we're at least on a nodding basis and a hearty "good morning" follows. It's nice to know ... more
