Do it for more than the points.
Are you familiar with the Active Rain Community Guidelines? The overarching theme here is respect.  Respect the industry, respect the law, respect your peers and overall, respect the ActiveRain community.  One particular bullet point among the Community Guidelines really got my attention, “The point system is intended to encourage and reward genuine effort. Points for blogging will only be awarded for your own original content”.
 
The first part of this statement is what really matters to me; the point system is intended to encourage and reward genuine effort.  I could write hundreds of blog posts about random topics just for the sake of getting points; however, I don’t.  I enjoy the ActiveRain contests which encourage me to push my boundaries in regards to which types of blog posts I write; however, the primary reason I write blogs is to engage with the public.  When I blog, I think what value am I bringing to the public, not how many points will this get me.
 
Similarly, when I read other people’s posts, I only comment if I have genuine value to contribute to the conversation.   Sure I could gain a few points saying great post; however, If I truly feel the content is valuable ... more
