Sedona Temporary Housing in the 1800's
This is an actual small living quarters that was used in the 1800's as our Sedona founders were building their homes and homesteads. Generally, thier homes started as one room and additional rooms were added as the years went by and as the family size increased.
Many of the founders were farmers or ranchers. The Verde Valley and Sedona farmers had such wonderful fruit and produce that many would travel from Prescott, Flagstaff and even Phoenix to get this fresh produce.
The Walter Jordan residence started as one room. At the time the Sedona Heritage Museum took it over it had about 8 rooms.  The kitchen was added on in the 1940's and it is a marvel in carpentry. Each of the doors that led outside, had a unique wooden locking mechanism. There was a special cold cabinet that was like a refrigerator but used the cold air near the ground level under the home and it was pushed up through the holes in the airtight cabinet. Pretty remarkable work!
