Come and see what this charming village has to offer!Butler is a village in Waukesha County, Wisconsin which was established in 1913. This charming village owes it very existence to the railroad.
In the Fall of 1909, representatives from the Milwaukee, Sparta, and North Western Railway, a division of the Chicago and North Western Railways, paid a visit to farmers on the east side of the 124th Street. The representatives offered to buy the farmers’ farmland to establish railroad yards as an addition to an outer belt line around the City of Milwaukee.
One of the properties that was acquired for the construction of the “New Butler” railroad yard was the farm of George and Jennie Clark, which was brought for $ 18,000,00. The couple reserved the right to move their house off the land before the start of the construction in the spring of 1910.
Their house was moved across the fields on rollers to its present location on the family’s ancestral farm at 128th Street and Hampton Avenue in the center of Butler. The Clarke house is now a public museum dedicated to the settlement of the village of Butler and its connection ... more
