Earth Day 2018 celebrated - big spring garden ready to plant
We celebrated Earth Day weekend by getting a new spring garden tilled up and ready to plant. My dear husband goes all out once a year and gives it a deep digging with his backhoe bucket to get rid of roots. I jump in and remove most of the grass roots, tree roots and other debris.  After adding supplements like compost and lime, he'll roto-till it all up thoroughly to make it light and lovely and rich. Ready to plant a spring garden!
This year while digging we also harvested the sweet potatoes which sort of took over naturally from some volunteer sprouts.  I've got a huge supply of sweet potatoes now which should store well for a few months, and the baby ones left in the ground will seed the next crop.

The seed starter bench is already loaded with young plants ready for the ground: bok choy; mesclun greens; butter lettuce; spring onions; basil; cilantro; cherry tomatoes; zinnias. Many more seeds will go straight into the warm ground. No worries about frost here in Hawaii - we can grow all year round.
