The entire area of Genesee was formed 10,000 years ago by the glaciers. At present, it has a hilly terrain, shallow soil landscape, and beds of gravel and limestone underlie the land surface.
 Genesee is unique because of the number of individual settlements in the township. There are five separate trading centers created by roads, railroads, and water power. Individual settlements include Genesee Village, Saylesville, Genesee Depot, North Prairie and Wales.
