2nd Annual Coastie Appreciation Day
U.S. Coast Guard, aka “Coasties”, have been an integral part of Traverse City, MI since 1946. Their community involvement, providing life-saving support and vital protection on the Great Lakes makes them superior stewards of our community. The Coasties have a broad reach within the US Coast Guard’s Ninth District – all of Lake Michigan and Lake Superior and most of Lake Huron. Their guardianship and the selfless sacrifices their families make on a daily basis is all the more reason we should show our appreciation.
 
From a fixed-winged search and rescue – one plane operation – to today’s MH-60T “Jayhawk” helicopters, our Coasties are ready to go when needed. Being prepared, willing and able is a daily occurrence. Covering over 6,700 miles of shorelines and 1,500 miles of our international border with Canada is a huge responsibility for the members of the US Coast Guard’s Ninth District. Coast Guard Air Station (CGAS) Traverse City is a key component to the Ninth District’s success.
