Space heater safety tips
Space heaters can be an easy and cost-efficient way to heat different rooms in your home. They can provide steady, consistent heat while taking up minimal space and utility costs. While they can be a great heating alternative, there are a few things to keep in mind to ensure they’re being used safely.
Keep any flammable object at least three feet from the space heater. This includes bedding, furniture, curtains and carpets. Avoid using these in a child’s bedroom unless they’re being supervised. Its easy for a child to accidentally burn themselves or objects in the room. Run power cord on top of carpet instead of under them to prevent overheating. Do not use extension cords. Ensure to turn the space heater off when going to bed or leaving the room. Only space heaters specifically made for damp or wet conditions should be used as such. Moisture from rain or steam from a shower can cause shorts and a potential shock hazard. Consistently check smoke detectors to ensure they perform properly.
