The Neighbourhood
Ramsay Heights is located in the Riverbend area of Edmonton.  It is bordered by the North Saskatchewan River Valley to the west, Terwillegar Drive and Whitemud Drive to the east, 40 Ave to the south and 51 Ave to the north.  The neighbourhood is centered around James Ramsey Park.  James Ramsey was an alderman and MLA and a retailing pioneer in Edmonton's history.  He opened the first departmental store in Edmonton on the ground floor of the Tegler Building in 1911.  The business was sold to the T. Eaton Company in 1928.  A high elevation point in Ramsey Park provides a panoramic view of Edmonton.
The neighbourhood of Ramsay Heights is named after Walter Ramsay (unrelated to James Ramsey) who was a teacher and Edmonton's first commercial florist and greenhouse operator in the early 1900s.  Ramsay Heights was mostly developed between 1970 and 1990.  The neighbourhood is laid out to promote pedestrian and bicycle movement with homes located in numerous cul-de-sacs feeding into the main collector roadway, Riverbend Road.
The population of Ramsay Heights is approximately 3,500 and there are 1,300 residences.  Most homes are single family (52%), apartments (33%), townhomes and duplexes (15%).
