Henry Brown.
Henry Brown was born in Louisa County, Virginia back in circa 1815 (true date of birth is not known). At 15 he was sent to work in a tobacco factory in Richmond. Born into slavery as far as I could tell he received no formal education. Henry married another slave Nancy, but their marriage was not recognized legally.
His master sold Nancy and their three children, never to be seen again. He escaped his master and became well known for speaking out against slavery. In 1850, he moved to England where he married Jane Floyd a whit Cornish tin worker’s daughter in 1855. He earned a living by making the abolitionist circuit, also performing as a magician, mesmerist and conjuror. He returned to the U.S. in 1875. He died in Toronto in 1897, around the age of 81-82.
What you may not know about Henry “Box” Brown is the way he escaped slavery. He built 3 feet long, by 2’8” deep and 2 feet wide. He had friends cut a single hole in it so he could breathe and mailed himself to James Miller McKim and William Still with the Pennsylvania Anti-Slavery Society.
