Thomas Bladen Capel
Thomas Bladen Capel was born in London, England back in 1776 to William and Harriet. At the tender age of 5 years 7 months old he served on the HMS Phaeton, which was common in those days. This insured him the possibility to rise rapidly through the ranks before actually going to sea.
I’m not going to write about all the ships he served upon, but I can tell you he joined the flagship of Rear-Admiral Sir Horatio Nelson in 1798. For his action during the Battle of the Nile, he was presented the sword of the senior, surviving French admiral. Later on, that same year he was promoted to Captain. In 1847, he was promoted to full admiral, he died at his home in 1853.
What you may not know about Thomas is that he served in the Royal Navy for 70 years, he distinguished himself in service during the French Revolutionary War, the Napoleonic Wars and the War of 1812. He was considered a full member of Nelson’s “band of brothers”.
