So really, The Monkees? With so many great songs and bands how did The Monkees become so popular? Why television of course. The Monkees were a pop and rock band that was comprised of actor-musicians that were formed to produce a television show. The show was a comedy that featured the band singing their way through a variety of humorous situations. The show caught on and the music they produced became very popular. In the end, the music outlasted the TV show.
When you think of The Monkees, you do not think of Carole King. But, one of The Monkees' biggest hits was a song written by Carole King and her longtime partner Gerry Goffin. Pleasant Valley Sunday was inspired by the street where the couple lived at that time. It was a commentary on life in the suburban communities that were sprouting up all over the country.
Released as a single in 1967 it reached No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100. The Monkees have sold more than 75 million records worldwide making them one of the more successful rock bands.
So here is another great song written by Carole King but made famous by another artist The Monkees.
