Why it is important to waterproof wet rooms
This is going to be a tiling related blog post detailing why it is important to waterproof wet rooms, showers and bathrooms before tiling.
 
The reason to waterproof before tiling
Before tiling a wet area, the substrate must be waterproofed or "tanked". The reason for this is to prevent mould and / or damp from forming in the future. Underlying substrates such as plaster, plasterboard and plywood are moisture sensitive. These substrates are also pourous in nature meaning moisure can be absorbed through them. 
When moisure gets into these pourous substrates, it damp starts to set in and mould will also appear and continue to spread through the substrate and through to other rooms and possibly through the floor and appear on the ceiling if the wet room is on the first floor.
 
Steps for waterproofing substrates
The first step would be to install baseboard panels around the area that you wish to waterproof before you tile it. You will also need to use waterproof tape and membrane to join boards together and to seal gaps that may be present between the tiles and the substrate.
