Marie Alfreda Johnson
Marie Alfreda Johnson was born in Prince Rupert, British Columbia back in 1925. She was a Haida woman of the Sadsugohilanes Clan (yes, it is spelled right). Anyway, let’s move on. She studied at the Vancouver School of Art and was one of the first students at Giltanmaax School of Northwest Coast Indian Art.
To say she was a late bloomer is true, as she didn’t start working in her profession until she was 42. She held a major part in the revival in Northwest Coast art in the 1960’s. Now, you may be wondering what she is noted for and I’m the one to tell you, so let’s get to it.
Somewhere along the line she changed her name to Freda Diesling. She was one of a very few female carvers in the Northwest Coast. She carved totem poles, portrait masks and bowls. I tried to find some of her works and the price if you can find one, but I could not. I bet you’ll have to dig deep if you want one.
