While in Paris he invented the first meter used for measuring the distance for taxicabs.
He returned to Saint Petersburg in 1873 where he worked as a mechanical engineer. His specialty was mainly concentrated around the aviation and ship building industry.
What you may not know about Stefan is that he developed a method for the manufacture of ship and plane propellers, presented the general theory for screw-propeller thrush, devised a torpedo-launching system and made an instrument that drew the precise routes of ships onto a nautical chart. But what he is most noted for is that he built the first submarine in the world with electric battery-powered propulsion.
