Stefan Drezewlecki
Stefan Drezewlecki was born in Podolia, Russian Empire back in 1844. He was sent to Paris, France to avoid the partitioned Poland to complete his education. However, during the January Uprising he returned to take part in the uprising. He returned to Paris to finish his education. While in Paris he invented the first meter used for measuring the distance for taxicabs.
He returned to Saint Petersburg in 1873 where he worked as a mechanical engineer. His specialty was mainly concentrated around the aviation and ship building industry.
What you may not know about Stefan is that he developed a method for the manufacture of ship and plane propellers, presented the general theory for screw-propeller thrush, devised a torpedo-launching system and made an instrument that drew the precise routes of ships onto a nautical chart. But what he is most noted for is that he built the first submarine in the world with electric battery-powered propulsion.
