According to data provided by the U.S. Census Bureau the average number of people occupying a house in the United States in 1850 was just over 5 people.
 
Over the years that average number of people occupying a house has steadily declined.
 
Even during the baby boom, that number was significantly lower at an average of 3.36 people per house as compared to the over 5 average of 1850.
 
Nevertheless, even with declining numbers, if we stopped with these numbers, then we could see how the idea that it is difficult to sell a 2 bedroom house could have developed.  The people could not easily fit into the house.
 
However, that average number has continued to decline such that the average number of people per house had gone down to about 2.50 people today.
 
This number varies as you go to different parts of the country.  Maine had the lowest average at 2.19, while Utah had the highest average at 3.12.  For a global comparison, Germany is near the lowest at 1.99.  These numbers were based on statistics from 2018.
