Wordless Wednesday...Eggs-actly
Wordless Wednesday...Eggs-actly

Larry and I are so excited!  Months ago, Larry rehabbed 5 of the bluebird boxes out at Kickerillo-Mischer Preserve where we typically walk. This was all done with the permission and blessing of the Park’s events administer.

We have been checking on them as part of a Nest Watch program.  The bluebirds almost immediately began checking out the boxes and then slowly we could see both the male and female bird bringing nesting material to the boxes!

And look at what the boxes have!!!  Three of the 5 boxes and one in our backyard have eggs. And one other nest has nesting material in it.

The incubation period is from 11 to 19 days.  One of the reasons we are so excited is that the bluebird population has been negatively impacted by us...population growth impinging on forested lands. Unlike other birds, the bluebirds prefer to nest in natural cavities or nest boxes.

We only monitor the boxes to make sure that no predators have taken over. Just this morning a cowbird tried to go into the box we have at home and both mom and dad bluebird were quickly on top of it!

More photos to come!!!

... more
