Woodpeckers and Saguaros in Arizona
If you live in Arizona, saguaro cactus plants can be seen almost everywhere - in the desert, in parks and in our front yards.  The saguaro (pronounced sowaro) is also the state flower of Arizona.
The saguaros provide shelter to many birds. The first to move in are usually the woodpeckers.

Woodpeckers can be noisy and make some "drumming sounds" during the mating season between March and May. 
They feed on some wood-boring insects like termites, and other small insects. That's a good reason not to feel irritated if they are around our houses and making noises. 
After the nesting period is over, the wood-peckers usually move on, and leave the nests in the saguaros for other birds' use.
