Should you take a stand on social/political issues?
For the last few days I’ve been getting emails urging me to buy a book on how to take a stand on social / political issues without losing my customer base.
According to this email, “Silence speaks volumes.”
Of course I don’t know which side of the various issues this person is on, but I expect that not falling in line would mean speaking volumes against his/her position.
Meanwhile, I don’t agree that corporations and independent business people need to take a public stand on every issue.
I wish they didn’t, really. I also wish people in the entertainment world would keep their views to themselves and their own circle of friends. How did acting, singing, or playing a ball game make them authorities on politics, etc.?
I wish none of them would get up to holler about how wrong and awful the other side is – and I SURE wish they wouldn’t fabricate stories. I also think it's pointless, because I don’t think those people change anyone’s minds. If anything, their rudeness makes their opponents even more entrenched in their beliefs.
What I think is that we all need to focus on doing our jobs, whether or not we agree with our customers’ views. ... more
