What do you think is holding you back?
There are a variety of ways to get to where you want to be.  The first step in any journey is to figure out. to decide on where you want to go.  No person is an island and it makes sense to get advice from someone who is like minded and possibly more experienced in the direction you want to go.
 
Home ownership is very fundamental to American Society.  
 
Home ownership makes more sense to everyone to explore for there particular place in life.  We all need a place to live.  Ownership makes more sense at certain times than others.  If you are paying for a place to live it makes sense to pay your self first.  
 
I do think that everyone needs to explore their own situaiton and develop a plan for their lives.
 
Down payments might not be important because there are a variety of programs available for qualified buyers who do not have that down payment readily available.
