Why Tree Swings Are Coming Back In Style
There was a time in America when virtually every yard had a swing hanging from a tree. Whether for a child who lived there, or a remnant of a child who was grown up and moved on, these old fashioned tree swings hung from old hardwoods across the country.
Tree swings slowly went out of style starting in the late twentieth century, for several reasons. In the 1970s and ‘80s, prefabricated metal swing sets became more popular. These sets included multiple swings, climbing elements, and slides.
These sets came in a box and could be assembled in an afternoon, or could even be purchased and delivered fully assembled. Compare that with the tree houses and rope swings of the prior generation that required knowledge of carpentry and construction principles, plenty of time, and a full tool set.
Since many schools stopped offering shop programs, the skills needed to build a swingset or treehouse from scratch began to fade from the average american father sometime in the 1980s.
In the 1990s, the metal sets of the 80s gave way to elaborate wooden playsets. These sets were designed to look homemade, but usually come from a big box hardware store.
