Chaney is shards of fine china which can mostly be found along the beaches and on historic plantations on the Caribbean island of St. Croix. Chaney is a word made up by local children who used to smooth and round out these shards and use them as play money, combining the words “china” and “money” they became forever known as Chaney. Whether broken china was thrown overboard to avoid taxes or thrown away from being chipped, these small pieces can be found throughout the island. So Close to a Landmark...Family and Friends took Priority! I was so close to reaching the 200,000 mark on Active Rain....my family and friends took priority as I traveled from the Virgin Islands to attend my nephew's wedding in Philadelphia. No internet for a long time. We arrived on Tuesday evening but immediately drove towards Rhode Island to visit my husband's closest friend from college. I had never been to Rhode Island so we totally enjoyed the scenert along the way......didn't worry about email, internet or points on ActiveRain. Today, a spectacular sunrise greeted my morning! Having spent the past few months on the beautiful island of St. Croix, I make it a point to wake up early so I can enjoy the colorful sunrises. Today did not disappoint! I normally shoot with a Nikon D7000 but I always keep my Iphone handy for times like this. This image was taken from my veranda. st croix: No Rain in Sight

When my day is filled with so many deadlines, numerous difficulties and an overwhelming desire to just get away from it all, I pull up photos of St. Croix and imagine that I am on the beach at Buck Island. I take a deep breath, close my eyes.....and I am there. Life is slow, uncomplicated and beautiful.

Whenever I get tired of cold and snowy days, I look at photos taken from my visits to St. Croix, USVI. The following photo is of the Botanic Gardens. We visited on a weekday and saw only 2 other people the entire time we were on the lush grounds of this amazing facility. Unlike St. Thomas and St. John that are filled with tourists, St. Croix maintains a lovely, Caribbean lifestyle....steady and slow, but filled with incredible views, scrumptious smells and incredible hospitality.
