book collectors: We spent time at the Los Angeles Festival of Books... - 04/20/24 10:45 PM
Diane and I have been going to the Festival of Books for the past 24+ years. If memory serves me correctly, we only missed the first two... Now with that said this year we did not get a new coffee mug. Usually, we get one every year commemorating our visit to the Festival of Books. This year was a total disappointment.
The marketing was too vague and too discouraging. In the old days if you wanted to see an author you did not have to pay to enter. This year the message was mistakenly focused on, that you cannot get to see … (43 comments)

book collectors: Murder on the Orient Express by Agatha Christie a book review... - 10/30/23 10:54 PM
Not the first time I am thanking  Ricki Eichler McCallum for getting me back to reading again! After enjoying her novel and sequel, I next decided to pick up Murder on the Orient Express by Agatha Christie. If you've not read this classic tale book and love mysteries, this one is a must read.  I saw the movie when it came out in 1974 with the stellar cast of Sean Connery, Richard Widmark and Ingrid Bergman and Albert Finney as Inspector Poirot. After all these years, I had no recollection of the details or the ending, hence it was an easy fast-paced read that held … (25 comments)

Today's Destination was : Vroman's Bookstore in Pasadena, CA... Diane took a staycation also known as a vacation staying home. The reason was to quietly celebrate her birthday. Needless to say, it is coming up in a few days and we have been leading up to it day by day.
She bought a bunch of cards, such as birthday cards, thank you cards, sympathy cards etc. You get the idea at our age and relatives and friends who are at a higher age might come handy. She also bought a few presents for our friends too.
More importantly, this was the first time … (8 comments)

Snow Fire  a novel by  Ricki Eichler McCallum  Book Review by Endre Barath
As most of my readers know, having read my posts, I am book lover and sadly have become more of a book collector, not a reader as I once was, thanks to the Internet and social media.  One of our Active Rain friends has become a published author - I'm sure everyone will join me in wishing her heartfelt congratulations on this amazing accomplishment.
Since I'm never in my Beverly Hills office, opting to work from home well before the pandemic made this more of a 'novel' concept, I was … (42 comments)

book collectors: Ten year Aniversary of the Last Bookstore in Los Angeles... - 04/29/23 10:44 PM
Shop Small on Independent Bookstore Day!
Hard to believe that the Last Bookstore opened ten years ago in Downtown Los Angeles. Diane and I had to be at the grand opening. Now with that said I received an email that it has been ten years since the date.
We were both busy, but I could not let this event go by without stopping in. Now then to boot I received an email from American Express that if I go and shop, I will get a $25 credit.  Clearly it was a sign for me to go.
Ten years ago, I bought a T-shirt for … (22 comments)

book collectors: LOST BOOKS Plants & Vinyl - 02/28/23 09:21 PM
You might recall I wrote a couple posts about Montrose, California and specifically this cute street called Honolulu Street. Well, the real reason we went there was because Diane wanted to visit the sister bookstore of Lost Books in LA the one in Downtown Los Angeles aka DTLA.
Needless to say, we were both looking forward to seeing this bookstore that opened during the Pandemic.  It was very quaint, and we wanted to spend time browsing. There were a great many others where browsing. Sadly, there was one person who kept coughing incessantly for like five minutes. I told Diane I am … (19 comments)

Throwback Thursday: do you remember the first movie you saw or the first book you read?
Needless to say this post is dedicated to my Dad who introduced me, and thought me to appreciate nature, animals, movies and books.

This might be a lot to cover is a short post: my father took me to the movie theater when I was barely walking and had me see Jacques Cousteau’s movie about fish in the deep sea. BTW it was my first movie. Loved it the year was around 1957 or 1958, not sure I was very young, but I can still see how … (32 comments)
