inspirational: Pleasure the Peculiar

Everyone who eats at your restaurant expects a good cup of coffee, and it's difficult to wow them, because, of course, your competition is working to do the same thing.
But of course, it's not everyone who wants a cup of coffee. Some want a cup of tea, or a cup of herbal tea, and those folks are used to being ignored, or handed an old Lipton tea bag, or something boring.
What if you had thirty varieties for them to choose from?
Everyone who stays at your hotel expects the same sort of service, and it's difficult (13 comments)

You've saved and scrimped and spent hours on the plane, and now you're in Italy for the trip of a lifetime. It's likely you'll never be here again, and you've only got three days. Question: How much time are you going to spend in the hotel room watching reality TV on cable? For that matter, how much time will you spend checking your email, grooming your social network status or browsing around online to see what's new? You only have three days. Now it's a week later, and you're back at your desk. Consider the fact that the most interesting or (6 comments)

inspirational: The House We Build
- 09/03/13 03:53 AM
Family Abstract had the incredible opportunity to do Title Insurance on the house in this story. I hope you enjoy...
An elderly carpenter was ready to retire. He told his employer-contractor of his plans to leave the house-building business and live a more leisurely life with his wife enjoying his extended family. He would miss the paycheck, but he needed to retire. They could get by. The contractor was sorry to see his good worker go and asked if he could build just one more house as a personal favor. The carpenter said yes, but in time it was easy to see (4 comments)
inspirational: What do you see? What can we learn from Kids?
- 08/13/13 06:04 AM
When I look at a patch of dandelions, I see a bunch of weeds that are going to take over my yard. What my kids see are flowers for Mom and blowing white fluff you can wish on. When I look at an old drunk and he smiles at me, I see a smelly, dirty person who probably wants money and I look away. What my kids see is someone smiling at them and they smile back. When I hear music I love, I know I can’t carry a tune, so I sit self-consciously and listen. What my kids hear is (13 comments)

I spent my 50th Birthday on an Island named Isla Mujeres, it is 5 miles off the coast of Cancun, it is wonderful. While I sat mesmerized by the ocean, the waves, the color and the beauty, I began to watch a little boy in the sand, building his castles. I sat in my chair and in my mind thought about the story between this "Boys Castle" and the "Castle" of "Grownups"
A little boy is on his knees scooping and packing the sand. To the delight of the little architect, a castle is created. All afternoon he will work. (10 comments)

Do you live your Life, Now Or Later. As a co-owner of Family Abstract, I am trying to get into the mindset of the fisherman in the following story.. My brother and his roommate in law school had almost the exact story as below. The difference being that Joe, his roommate, bought a 23 Acre mountain, in the "Boonies" of Pennsylvania that included a 3 bedroom 3 bath home, a mountain, 2 streams, a lake, trails, 300 Blackberry bushes, and a horse barn for their 3 horses, all for 125,000. My brother took a job in Center City, with an eye (26 comments)

- 09/24/12 03:17 AM
My father and I are so lucky and fortunate to travel together. Last summer we undertook a 180 mile coast-to-coast walk across Wales in England. Our walk was a celebration of sorts. (And a great vacation from Family Abstract and all that is Title Insurance.) A year earlier my father, who was then 70, had undergone open heart surgery. Now we were walking together atop a long, curving ridge where we befriended Erica, a Welsh woman who was clearly oblivious to the beck and call of stress. At dusk the three of us encountered an elderly lady and her beagle hiking (10 comments)

Our Title Agency, Family Abstract was lucky enough to have a home buyer send me the link to the attached video. What do you do "From the Heart"? What do you give, "From the heart"? How do you Inspire, "From the heart"? I have read all the blog posts on the Thank you gifts you give to your buyers and sellers ranging in price from a few dollars to a few hundred dollars but is that what will leave a lasting impression? inspirational: Play to Win or Don't Bother Playing
- 08/29/12 12:50 AM
Let me give you an example from my own life. When I was just starting out in the Title Insurance business I was very aggressive. I was willing to put everything I had on the line to succeed (mind you in those days, it was not much); nevertheless, it was all I had. For each new initiative, I would have to bet the farm on my ideas, and I never hesitated. I was always willing to use my house, my car, my time, anything I had for collateral on my ideas. The paradox of playing to win or playing not to (4 comments)

At Family Abstract, Inc. we will do a settlement anywhere the parties want to. We have done them at an office, on a hood of a car, at a rest stop, in a hotel, at the airport and on and on. This particular day we were asked to do the settlement in a park that was adjacent to the property. Our picnic table, settlement office was set back to back with a father and mother having a conversation. It struck us all that the “Difficulties” and the outstanding issues even the nagging and somewhat disturbing challenges of getting a home to (4 comments)

Every man knows that the secret to success is a good woman. Throughout history the story of man and wife is timeless, ageless and remarkable. The wife is the foundation of the marriage, hence the reason the husbands signature is always on top for legal documents. I often quip during settlements at Family Abstract that "Your husband signs on the top line because you need to be there to hold him up, your the strength, the foundation". Does this loyalty ever go to far? I hope you enjoy the 1:30 second cartoon i created, please leave me a comment. ================================================================== (7 comments)

- 06/01/12 12:43 AM
At Family Abstract, A Title Insurance agency, we ask the question, "What is the appraised "VALUE" of a "Trouble Tree"? The carpenter I hired to help me restore an old farmhouse had just finished a rough first day on the job. A flat tire made him lose an hour of work, his electric saw quit, and then his pickup truck refused to start. I drove him home and when we arrived, he invited me in to meet his family.
As we walked toward the front door, he paused briefly at a small tree, touching the tips of the (0 comments)
inspirational: Who Wants a Hundred Dollar Bill?
- 03/12/12 02:36 AM
Last year I was in an audience listening to a motivational speaker. He whipped out his wallet and pulled out a One Hundred Dollar bill. Holding it up, he asked, "Who wants this One Hundred Dollar bill?" Lots of hands went up, including mine. A slow chorus began to build as people began to shout "Me!" "Me!" I began to wonder who the lucky one would be who the speaker would choose. And, I also secretly wondered -- and I am sure others did, too -- why he would simply give away a hundred dollars. As the shouts of "I want it" (3 comments)

Imagine that you had won the following prize in a contest: Each morning your bank will deposit $86,400.00 in your private account for your use. However, this prize comes with rules just like any game has certain rules. The first set of rules would be: The money that you do not spend during each day would be taken away from you. You may not simply transfer money into some other account. You may only spend it. Each morning upon awakening, the bank opens your account with another $86,400.00 for that day. The second set of rules: The bank can end the (0 comments)
inspirational: Sharp decline in both jobs and wages in the Title Insurance Sector

We can certainly blame a lot of this on the economy in general, but can't we also specifically cite specific initiatives such as First American's newly introduced INSTANT commitment program? Insurance News Net reports a sharp decline in both jobs and wages in the Title Insurance Sector.
Employment in the U.S. insurance industry added 3,300 jobs in December -- a 3.3% increase from the previous month, according to the latest employment report released by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The insurance-industry employment figures for December put the industry about on par with where it stood in April. (0 comments)

I had a boss that was always in a good mood. Every day he came to work with a big smile on his face and always replied with tons of energy "I am fantastic!" when asked the question; "How are you doing?" He also always found something on which to compliment people - like how they looked or the work they've done. This happened every single day.The interesting point here is how this behavior affected everybody who met him. Everybody smiled and asked him what he had for breakfast or what kind of drugs he was on. "I just think life (10 comments)
