terry edwards: DOW 10,000 We Barely Knew Ye - 10/16/09 12:36 PM
DOW 10,000 We Barely Knew Ye
That didn't last long.  Bank of America posted a $1 billion third-quarter loss due to delinquent credit card and mortgage payments.
GE reported weaker-than-expected quarterly revenue which was disappointing after such strong reports by some other companies earlier in the week.
Closing at 9,996 is not a bad way to end the week, though.  More earnings reports are on tap for next week and any good data should move us back higher.  This has been a tremendous rebound from the first week of March when the DOW slipped below 7,000.  Hopefully everyone's IRA and 401K holdings are looking much better than … (7 comments)

terry edwards: Air Show At McEntire National Guard Base - 10/14/09 09:59 PM
Columbia SC     This past weekend McEntire Joint National Guard Base sponsored an airshow that featured dozens of military planes and ground vehicles and the Golden Knights paratroopers.
About 1,200 men and women train at the base that is the home of the 169th Fighter Wing.
The SC Air National Guard has flown F-16s since 1983, with over 2,600 combat missions in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Saturday was a beautiful clear sunny day for the event but unfortunately I went on Sunday with a 900' cloud ceiling and the air show was limited.

That didn't stop me from climbing in … (3 comments)

terry edwards: Baby Squirrels In A Bucket - 09/19/09 01:08 PM
Hopkins SC
Yesterday I had Palmetto Tree Service come to my place to remove a couple of large trees that were growing near the house.
We found these 2 sisters and a brother that had been hiding in a nest about 25 feet up.  Fortunately they all seemed unharmed from the fall.
None of them had their eyes open yet and one of the guys said he would take them home and feed them baby formula from an eye dropper.  He has done this in the past and he said that after about 2 weeks they would be ready to turn loose.  I … (8 comments)

terry edwards: Why Rent When You Can Buy? - 09/13/09 07:48 PM
Columbia, SC                                                                   Why Rent When You Can Buy?
Home prices have dropped so much that the cost to own and maintain a house is only a bit more than the cost of renting.
An Opportunity for New Buyers
The housing slump has brought the own vs. rent equation closer to where it was before the housing bubble drove sales prices way above rental costs.  The foreclosure crisis has trampled down prices.  Low interest rates and government incentives such as the $8,000 first-time home buyer federal tax credit, which expires November 30th, is attracting new buyers previously priced out of the market.  … (1 comments)

terry edwards: Homes For Sale In Arcadia Lakes, SC - 09/04/09 04:12 PM
Columbia SC  Until the early 1900s the area now known as Arcadia Lakes was farmland and towering pines.  It was called the Douglas Mill land back then and several multi-acre lots were sold to Columbia families that wanted to move to the country.  An election in 1959 marked the official beginnings of the town of Arcadia Lakes.  The Federal Census count of 1960 had climbed to over 300 residents.
The Arcadia Lakes time capsule was buried behind the Tree of Life Congregation in 1991.  For some reason it was dug up and is now being held in a safety deposit box at a First … (2 comments)

terry edwards: Albert Pujols and Lou Gehrig - 08/16/09 10:10 PM

Columbia SC   I've been an unabashed St. Louis Cardinals fan since I was about 8 years old.  Even after moving and living hundreds of miles away the Red Birds are in my blood.
Of all the players I've seen come and go, Albert Pujols is the greatest.  He now has nine seasons with a .300 average, 30 homers, 30 doubles and 100 RBIs, tied with LOU GEHRIG for the best in history!
And not once has his name been linked to steroids.
Congratulations Albert.

terry edwards: How Columbia SC Rolled, Part II - 08/05/09 07:23 AM
Columbia SC
Within two decades of General Sherman's march through town the Columbia Street Railway Company was formed in 1882.  The first trolley cars were hand-crafted from the ground up featuring hand-milled oak woodwork and solid brass hardware and were pulled by horses.
Ten years later, in 1892 the Columbia Electric Street Railway, Light and Power Company was formed and within a year electric streetcars were rolling in Columbia.  These electric streetcars were the main source of revenue for the company and soon the houses along the streetcar routes had power delivered to them.

These trolleys helped the suburbs … (2 comments)

terry edwards: Can I Really Afford a Home? - 08/04/09 09:49 PM
Columbia SC   "Can I really afford a home?" and then "How much home can I afford?" are two of the most asked questions I commonly hear.
The answer to both is simple:  what is your debt to income ratio?  Debt is considered an item that is owed that shows up on your credit report.  Student loans, car loans and outstanding balances on credit cards are all debts.
Today's typical mortgage lender will top you out at 31% for housing costs and 43% total.
What if you have little or no credit?  Lenders can use alternative types of history to serve as credit.  … (0 comments)

terry edwards: FIVE GUYS BURGERS and FRIES - 07/28/09 11:55 AM
Columbia SC    I have never written about a restaurant before but the food at FIVE GUYS BURGERS and FRIES was GREAT.
I met my wife and daughter at the Forest Dr. location today for lunch.  We had all heard good things about it but the food was waaaaaaaaay better than we expected.  I had a good feeling about the place when we walked through the door and there were all these sacks of potatoes stacked around.  There's something you don't see everyday.
I ordered the bacon burger with grilled onions and A-1 sauce along with an order of fries and a drink.
We were handed … (4 comments)

terry edwards: The Hampton Neighborhoods of Columbia SC - 07/24/09 12:19 AM
Columbia SC
Wade Hampton played a major role in the economic and political development of South Carolina and became one of the wealthiest planters in the South.
Born in Virginia in 1751, Wade Hampton was a descendant of a Jamestown settler of 1630. Prior to the American Revolution, his parents decided to seek their fortune on the frontier of South Carolina. Here, except for Wade and three of his brothers, the family was massacred by Indians in 1776.
Wade Hampton went on to serve in the American Revolution as a South Carolina volunteer in the cavalry and was promoted to Brigadier … (2 comments)

terry edwards: Columbia SC 2009 Mid Year Home Market Report - 07/13/09 11:21 PM
Columbia SC 2009 Mid Year Home Market Report
In 2009 home sellers are battling shrinking home values and a smaller pool of available buyers. Buyers are sensing opportunities on home prices and home mortgages -- if they have the credit, job security and ready cash to qualify.
Those in the best shape are homeowners who don't have to sell and homebuyers with good credit and a stash of cash.
You don't have to be a buyer or seller to realize that homes are sitting on the market longer. This spring the inventory of unsold Columbia area homes would have taken 8 … (0 comments)

terry edwards: Should I Rent Or Buy A Home? - 07/09/09 12:18 AM
Should I Rent Or Buy A Home?
Columbia SC   This has got to be one of the more gut-wrenching decisions everyone must make because it deals with such a large percentage of your income.
I will attempt to break down the numbers to determine financially which is the better option.  This will always be determined by your time horizon for living in the home.
Let's say you plan to live in a particular home valued at $150,000 for 3 years.  This is a fairly common amount of time for military personnel and recent grads who have landed their first jobs.
If you … (0 comments)
