terry edwards: Greenland Ice Could Fuel Severe U.S. Sea Level Rise - 05/27/09 10:33 PM
Columbia, SC   The U.S. east coast could face a rise in sea level this century that would exceed forecasts for the rest of the planet if Greenland's ice sheet keeps melting as fast as it is now, researchers said on Wednesday.
Sea levels off the coast of North America could rise by 12 to 20 inches more.  This is an even bleaker assessment than an earlier study indicated.  The ice that covers much of Greenland is melting faster now due to global climate change, raising world sea levels.
Greenland's ice melt rate has increased by 7% a year since 1996.  This … (0 comments)

terry edwards: Columbia SC Is Shovel Ready - 03/04/09 10:53 PM
Columbia SC     One of President Obama's selling points for the stimulus package is the thousands of projects nationwide that he calls "shovel ready" - meaning the planning is complete, approvals are secured and people could be put to work right away once funding is in place.
For us this means the City of Columbia could receive funding for various projects that have already had the preliminary work completed.
Here is a link to a chart showing what the City of Columbia is ready to move forward on, projected costs per project and how many employees will be required.
 Let's go.

terry edwards: The Garnet Army Rocks - 03/04/09 09:36 PM
Columbia SC     The other night my daughter and I went to the USC-Arkansas overtime thriller and I've got to tell you.....The Garnet Army Rocks.
I've been watching the Gamecocks for years and have never seen this type of fan involvement.  When the music cranks up and the Garnet Army cranks up the arena rocks.  It is electrifying like an NHL game.  The sound system is awesome and the big video board over center court is leading edge.
GO COCKS!

The Ashley Furniture HomeStore at 108 Harbison Blvd. in Columbia has reopened.  After closing late last year the new owners, Jonathan Ishee and Charlie Malouf, are optimistic about this location.
Ishee and Malouf have been successful with their 9 other Ashley Furniture stores in North and South Carolina.  I wish them well with this location.  There have been too many retailers close up shop recently and it is good to see a high profile business move back into the area.

terry edwards: I Vote For An $825 Billion Bailout For US Taxpayers - 01/22/09 07:26 PM
The House has agreed to an $825 BILLION stimulus package that has numerous and varied trappings and once the monies are disbursed all we can do is sit back and wait to see if it all helps our economy.
I decided to try my hand at using these huge numbers for the purpose of assisting the working citizens of this great country instead of handing it to CEOs who already have shown their track record.
I ran a quick web search for the total US population and the latest figures place it at 306 million souls.  I also found that 28% of … (6 comments)

terry edwards: Spectacular Three Evening Sky Event - 12/30/08 04:38 AM
12-29-08
Beginning this evening right after the sun goes down (about 5:45) the southwestern sky will feature a performance by three planets and the last new moon of 2008.
This evening the two day old moon will set just to the lower right of Mercury and Jupiter and will change positions each evening compared to the planets.
How many opportunities do you have to view four planets at the same time?  Throw in some wispy pink clouds and sit back and relax.
Happy New Year to all.

terry edwards: 2008 Columbia SC Home Sales Through November 30 - 12/14/08 07:11 PM
Columbia SC

For the first time in a long time the total number of home sales in the Greater Columbia area dropped from the previous year.  Even though mortgage rates were below 6.5% the entire year Columbia's sales were off by more than 2,000 units.

The Columbia area sales of Condos and Patio Homes were also down over 20% while Townhome sales dipped only slightly.  The surprising number to me is the drop in patio home sales because the number of new patio home communities has really increased the last couple of years and I thought sales had been … (2 comments)
