social media: Why Blog? The Strength of Weak Ties - 12/29/09 06:14 AM

There you are, writing on Activerain or your website’s blog, and you’re posting about real estate, using the internet, your thoughts and experiences, really anything that might attract readers to your posts. After weeks and months of writing, and after dozens of posts, you ask yourself one fundamental question: how does blogging help me get customers?
Being a real estate agent is a lot like dating in that your chances for success are limited by one huge challenge: meeting the other person, either in-person, online or otherwise. If you never enter someone else’s consciousness as an option, you … (1 comments)

social media: Online social media in 2010 - 12/21/09 02:15 AM

Online social media is like the fax machine: the more people use it, the more valuable it becomes. That value comes from the potential of the medium to access the person you want: as Twitter grows, not only are more people using volume-wise, more people in my personal network are using it, so its relative use value to me increases at the same time.
It’s hard to remember a time not everyone had email but now it’s the default way to contact someone, though that is probably being overtaken by texting for friends and family. The … (0 comments)

social media: How to Style Your Blog Post on Active Rain - 11/20/09 05:57 AM
How to style your blog post on Active Rain Notice how our posts have a bit of custom style? Red headers, green links, etc. Well, this is super easy to do. Here's how:
First click the HTML tab above the text area where you type your blog posts. Then, write some very basic html. For example, a paragraph is wrapped in 'p' tags, like this:

social media: A Better Way to Grow Your Business with Facebook - 11/19/09 03:08 AM
Everyone's talking about social networking - and for good reason. When done right, social networking is an incredibly cheap, incredibly effective way to market your business. But unfortunately most people have it all wrong.
This is especially true with Facebook. Most people create a profile for their business, add a few photos, send some friend requests, and expect new business to start rolling in. Although that's not a horrible approach, it's not likely to attract any new business.
But like I said there's a better way - Facebook Pages. These are special pages (different from your standard profile or group) for … (8 comments)

social media: How to let people know you exist - 11/18/09 04:12 AM
In the startup community this problem is pretty universal. When you start something new, you'd like to get people excited and talking about it. But of course the same idea applies to any business - especially real estate where creating and maintaining contacts is critical.
But this isn't always easy. Sure you can set up a Twitter or make an account at WordPress. But if you're not smart about it, no one's even going to know you exist. And after two weeks of hard work and no buzz, you'll get discouraged and give up. So here are some quick tips to … (1 comments)

social media: How do people ACTUALLY choose their real estate agents? - 11/17/09 04:27 AM
As I peruse the shelves at Barnes and Noble and surf through the internet’s slew of expertise real estate advise, the picture I am presented with is a world filled with people asking critical questions, doing detailed research, and conducting grueling interviews to choose the “right” agent.
But this just isn’t reality.
Unfortunately, there are no authoritative academic ethnographies detailing how people first decide to actually buy or sell a home (versus waiting or entirely abandoning the sale), or on how people chose their agents. Instead, we have stories from agents (, guides on eHow (, user-created lists of … (2 comments)
