news and events: Woodstock Turns 40 - 08/12/09 11:38 AM
Ex hippies, yuppies and college students of a certain age may remember, in the summer of 1969, seeing ads for "3 Days of Peace and Music" posted around Greenwich Village in New York City, college campuses, and other places where the young and hip were likely to find it.
I almost got to the Woodstock Festival myself - entirely by accident!  My fiancee and I had planned to go for the weekend upstate to the Concord Hotel & Resort in Monticello, NY, where I had previously worked.
We were surprised to find heavy traffic on route 9W that seemed more like weekday rush … (17 comments)

The festivities were scheduled to officially start at 7:30 pm.  Knowing that the crowds would be large, we arrived an hour and a half early - only to be turned away at the lower entrance to the park, which was alread full.

We were guided into an upper meadow, where the overflow cars were parked.  Those who came too late to park inside Long's … (13 comments)

news and events: PA Auto & Boat Show - 02/04/09 03:40 AM
I've been interested in cars since I was four, so the Pennsylvania Auto & Boat Show is an annual event not to be missed!   Held at the PA Farm Show Complex, 2301 Cameron Street in Harrisburg, all the major manufacturers, both domestic and foreign were represented this year.
However, due to the recession, hand-outs and promotional items were at a minimum.  You could see that companies were saving money during these slower times.  This was the first year I could remember where no one even gave away promotional plastic bags to hold the brochures that show goers might have collected.  And … (13 comments)

news and events: Lancaster PA Singles Christmas Party - 12/03/08 05:07 AM
December is the time for Christmas parties, and Red Rose Singles of Lancaster PA started the season out with a memorable holiday celebration on December 2!
Everyone contributed to the beautifully decorated refreshment table, which was loaded with fancy iced holiday cookies, fresh fruits, veggies with dips, cheeses, casseroles, hors d'oevres, candies, nuts, and cakes.
We started out with some Christmas trivia games, then had a spirited Christmas carol sing-along.  Although it was generally agreed that we could not have gotten through American Idol auditions, we did indeed make a joyful noise!
The mistletoe was hung by the doorway with care -

news and events: Ephrata PA Fair - 10/01/08 10:34 AM
The ninetieth Ephrata PA Fair is now history.  The weather threatened to rain on several days' worth of events, but in the final analysis, everything turned out all right.

The younger children were excited to ride on an old fashioned merry-go round!

Forget healthy eating!  County and state fair season only comes once a year!

Neon from the rides lights up the night.

Friday night we were treated to a trip down memory lane.  Flamin' Dick and the Hot Rods rocked the town with Rock & Roll hits from the '50s and '60s.

news and events: Brian Schulman Joins a New Office - All Due to Blogging! - 07/25/08 04:41 AM
Over a year ago, I started noticing some excellent photographs being posted on localism.com for various towns and boroughs in Lancaster County, PA.  Since I was posting numerous photos myself, I soon became familiar with the professional quality photography of Jeff Geoghan.
It turned out that Jeff had taken notice of my blogging, too!  One day, out of the blue, I received a phone call:  "Guess who this is!"  Over the ensuing months, we had lunch together several times, also including fellow blogger Jeannie Kontis, and discussed blogging and Lancaster County real estate matters.
In the mean time, exciting things were … (19 comments)

news and events: Caring Singles Picnic, East Lampeter Township, PA - 07/21/08 10:46 AM
On Saturday, July 19, Caring Singles held its summer picnic.  This year we held it at the East Lampeter, PA Township Community Park, a beautiful park located between Routes 30 and 340.

The weather was ninety-five degrees and muggy, but we had electric service to our pavillion and several members brought electric fans.  Coupled with an occasional breeze and the shade of the pavillion, we were all quite comfortable!

                                   Setting up for the picnic.

Lots of cold drinks and salads refrigerated in ice chests.

news and events: Senate Passes Housing Stimulus Bill - 07/12/08 12:38 PM
Friday, July 11, 2008:  The U.S. Senate passed a housing stimulus bill today.  Among other things the bill increases the Low Income Housing Tax Credit, which supports building affordable rental housing for low income families.
The bill also creates a new regulator for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, while at the same time removing some of the more draconian measures which would have severely limited those Government Sponsored Enterprises from purchasing mortgage loans.
The Senate, probably wisely, barred zero-down (100% loan-to-value) mortgages from being purchased by Fannie and Freddie.  The recent trend of foreclosures has been three times higher with 100% financing … (8 comments)
