Here in Southwest Florida there has been some confusion regarding bacteria contamination of drinking water and boil water notices. Here's some general considerations for folks who have "city water" versus those who have private wells. For people who have water supplied by their municipality, it is usually a safe bet to listen to what the local Dept of Health has to say and follow their suggestions. Be VERY careful about allowing anyone into your home who offers to do "free" water testing. Recently we have received a number of calls from people who have told us about a company that had mailed out offers for free water testing. In all cases the salesperson "tests" the water and tells the homeowners that their water is dangerously contaminated and that they need to immediately install new treatment equipment. In one case the man doing the "testing" actually told the homeowner that their water was so contaminated with bacteria that he could call the county and have the homeowner's water (3 comments)
