schnitzbrot: Schnitzbrot - It's That Time Of Year Again! - 10/12/20 08:59 AM
Schnitzbrot, it is indeed that time of year again and ever since my first posting here in ActiveRain of my Schnitzbrot recipe: https://activerain.com/blogsview/1968634/barbara-jo-s-new-and-improved-schnitzbrot
I have come here each year through a simple Google search to find it again. It is faster than searching through my recipes in the cloud! Pretty amazing that after all these years, ActiveRain still has this out there.
With that in mind, it is a real reason to post anything you want to find easily down the road right here in your ActiveRain blog!
Back to my Schnitzbrot, I generally make it just before Thanksgiving and my son normally flies in … (4 comments)

schnitzbrot: Schnitzbrot Time Again.......And It Isn't Christmas! - 03/03/14 06:15 AM
It is schnitzbrot time once again and it isn't Christmas. No, it is better than Christmas since my son, Sascha, is arriving in 3 days. So today I started cutting up dried fruit for my schnitzbrot.

Sascha loves my altered tropical version of something his Oma Heller made each year over the holidays. She has passed on but I make schnitzbrot each winter. This year I was ill over the holidays and by the time I was feeling up to it, it was too late to bake and mail to Germany in time for Christmas. So Sascha is getting his … (17 comments)

schnitzbrot: German Schnitzbrot Baking Day! Twenty Loaves This Year! - 11/17/12 05:32 AM
Today is German Schnitzbrot baking day! German Schnitzbrot is a Swabian Fruit Bread that my mother-in-law in Geislingen an der Steige used to make. I have varied her recipe to use tropical fruits but it is one holiday tradition that I love!

I have the last batch of 6 loaves of fruit bread baking right now and I started baking 7 hours ago! The entire process actually began 3 days ago, with cutting up the fruit and soaking it in rum.
Three loaves have already been delivered, one to a fishing buddy of Ron's, one to my favorite little waitress … (7 comments)

schnitzbrot: Barbara-Jo's New And Improved SCHNITZBROT - 11/15/10 01:14 AM
Well, since everything that gets posted to the internet remains there forever, I figured this is also the easiest way to pass on my new and improved SCHNITZBROT recipe so my kids will have it when I am no longer around to share it with them.

As you can see from the photo where a slice is cut and photographed on it's side, it is full of dried fruit. My 'ex', who lives in Germany, informed me that the correct Swabian spelling is Schnitzbrot, not Schnittsbrot, which is how it sounds. But that is getting off the topic of how … (6 comments)

schnitzbrot: Schnitzbrot (German Fruitbread) - It Is That Time Of Year Again! - 11/12/10 09:57 AM
Today I baked Schnitzbrot. That is German Fruitbread and it is nothing like American Fruitcake. It does not have ANY candied fruits in it! It has dried fruit that are cut small and soaked in rum over night (after the rum is brought to a slow boil). This year I used figs, mangos, papaya, pineapple, cranberries and apricots.

To the above mixture come walnut pieces and sliced almonds. Add spices and bread flour along with yeast and eggs. I made six loaves of this special bread and three of them will get mailed to Washington, DC to my son in … (8 comments)
