tampa fl localism: IKEA Coming To Tampa !!!! - 12/11/08 05:37 AM
IKEA is coming to Tampa! To many this may mean nothing, but this has special meaning to me. I LOVE IKEA!!!
Years ago, when I lived in Europe and was just starting out with family and children, we just to purchase our furniture and everything from towels and pillowcases to pots and pans at IKEA. It was trendy and inexpensive - extactly what young families want!
When I moved to this country I left all my IKEA furniture behind! Then about 6 years ago I opened a coffee shop and wanted to put IKEA in. So I had everything from tables … (10 comments)

The Columbia Restaurant in Ybor City has so many delicious things to offer that when we were there last Sunday everybody had something different. And being a compulsive blogger, you KNOW I had my camera ready and had to take photos BEFORE anyone could even look twice at their meal!!!

My daughter had the grilled chicken on Cuban bread with plantain chips! Gotta have that next time!

Sascha, my son, had their famous chicken and yellow rice! This has always been something he loves! When we lived in Europe my mother used to send me bags of Vigo … (4 comments)

Ybor City's Columbia Restaurantis a great place to go anytime of day! The food is fantastic - authentic Spanish cuisine in a magnificent setting! A great place to celebrate ANY special occasion and what could possibly be a better place to go when my son is in town from DC???

Established in 1905, the restaurant has grown by leaps and bounds but is still owned by the same family! What started out as a small corner cafe for the cigar workers to get a cheap lunch has turned into one of the best known places in the Tampa Bay area!

tampa fl localism: GUAVAWEEN - THIS WEEKEND IN YBOR CITY!!!!!!!!! - 10/24/08 06:56 PM
GUAVAWEEN is the annual Latin style Halloween Festival that is held in Tampa's Ybor City the last Saturday of October!
It seems years ago attempts were made to make this area known as the Big Guava, much like NYC is known as the Big Apple. Anyway, unsuccessful attempts were made at growing guavas commercially here but it never took off. But the Guava name lingered - hence Guavaween!
Festivities are always in Tampa's Latin Quarter: YBOR CITY
This year's merrymaking will begin in the morning hours of around 10 am, with events for the entire family! There are rides, plenty of … (2 comments)

tampa fl localism: Amendment 5 Still On The November Ballot In Florida - 08/20/08 07:36 AM
Amendment 5 is still on the November ballot in Florida. While a lower court wanted it removed, the state appealed and until the Supreme Court decides, it will remain on the ballot - regardless of what the media may be inaccurately reporting!
The Florida Supreme Court will have oral arguments on this topic on September 8th in Tallahassee - we will see what they decide.
Many are saying that this is the way to go - lower property taxes by 25% to 40% through Amendment 5 - BUT WHAT IS THE COST???????????????? PUBLIC EDUCATION - AGAIN!!!!!!!!! IT SHOULD BE THE LAST … (5 comments)

tampa fl localism: Renaissance Hotel at Tampa's International Mall - 03/18/08 07:18 AM
The Renaissance Hotel at Tampa's International Mall is a beautiful location for meetings, conventions and vacation trips too! This upscale hotel is convenient to Tampa as well as to the St Petersburg/Clearwater area since it is near the Causway and Interstate that lead to Pinellas County.

We meet here monthly for our Mastermind Meetings. There were two main reasons for choosing this location:
1- it is convenient for all of us since it is centrally located
2- the restaurant offers a separate room for meetings, so we could hold our meeting without disturbing other guests.

If you are looking … (0 comments)

tampa fl localism: Gasparilla Night Parade February 16 - 01/30/08 02:17 AM
Gasparilla is over - or is it? The Gasparilla Night Parade will take place in Ybor City on February 16th! It is amazing how long the City of Tampa celebrates this pirates activities! The Krewe of Sant Yago Illuminated Knight Paradewill begin at Channelside and proceed to Ybor City with floats, bands and pirates once again!!!
In addition to this, the pirates will return the key to the City of Tampa on February 9th. This formal handing over of the keys would perhaps best be done AFTER the parade on the 16th, but that is just my opinion. As you can … (2 comments)

It is that time of year again! The annual Gasparilla Pirate Invasion and Parade! Mark your calender for January 26th! The pirates will invade by ship (Jose Gasparilla - a fully rigged pirate ship). The ship will enter Tampa via Hillsborough Bay at around 11:30 in the morning! Hundreds of smaller boats will accompany the pirates as they enter Seddon Channel and come up along side Tampa General Hospital!
When I was a kid we used to go out in our family boat and watch the invasion from our 'front row seat'! It was something I looked forward to each year!

If you love Maya Angelou as much as I do, you will be interested in learning that she will be speaking tonight at the University of South Florida's Sun Dome in Tampa at 7pm. It is not often that we are honored with the presence of this wonderful poet and playwright in our area, so be sure to take advantage of this opportunity!!!

JIMMY BUFFETT, king of Margaritaville, will be on stage again tonight in Tampa!!! Needless to say, his performance last night at the Ford Amphitheater was sold out! Our own Governor, Charlie Crist introduced the legend to his crowd of loving fans!
But JIMMY BUFFETT does not need an introduction! His songs are known and loved by generations of Floridians! Many were wearing their parrothead hats of course and the crowd went wild when Buffett sang "Come Monday" and his famous "Margaritaville".
You know the world is alright when we still have JIMMY BUFFETT entertaining us!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
