The Opportunity to Serve Others
When I read about Belinda Spillman's November AR contest, I didn't know what to write about. Like many of you, I do things throughout the year, not just at the holidays. Also, I'm not really looking for "credit" for these things.
When I finally made the decision about my "topic" I ran out of time! The contest ended on Wednesday and I was busy with a new listing. So here I am. I'm still writing my post because I started it and I want to finish it!

July ActiveRain Contest:
What have you done to make a difference in your community?

Rich and I volunteer regularly at our town’s Senior Center. It fits in with our niche, working with older adults. Once a month, the center celebrates all birthdays and anniversaries that occur in that month. It's on the 3rd Wednesday. Rich and I have been serving lunch and bringing dessert for nearly a year.
Rich wears a Superman apron and I wear a Wonder Woman apron. The lunch crowd loves it! Rich also volunteers on Friday mornings as a driver, taking folks to the store, hairdresser, … (186 comments)

Pay It Forward: Pennies From Heaven

It can be simple and inexpensive to put a smile on someone else's face. This was not my own idea, but I was happy to implement it!

Step 1: Gather up some pennies. Doesn't matter how many. I decided on 25.
Step 2: Leave them on the ground (face up, of course).
Step 3: Allow someone else to find the "lucky" penny!

I'm hoping that I will make 25 people smile!

"See a penny, pick it up. All day long, you'll have good luck."

Pay It Forward: Santa Fe Chicken for Dinner!
In October 2008, I had hip replacement surgery and the agents in my office rallied around and helped with meals for 2 weeks.  Since then, I'm always thankful when the opportunity presents itself to repay that kindness.
A member of our Rotary group has been in and out of the hospital recently.  She has a husband and 2 children.  Our members have been taking turns preparing meals for their family.  Wednesday was our turn.  I prepared one of our favorites, Santa Fe Chicken.  (Of course, I made a double batch so we could have … (17 comments)

Pay It Forward: Helping a Fellow Entrepreneur
It's that's time of year again.  Time for the young entrepreneur freshly out of elementary school.  Time for the 2011 Lemonade Stand!
Rich and I left the house to go run an errand.  When we left the house, I noticed the kids on the corner had a lemonade stand.  I told Rich we should stop on the way back.  Unfortunately, we had a load in the truck that needed to be unloaded.  We drove home unloaded the truck and then I got my quarters.
I walked to the "corner lemonade stand".  They were eager to … (16 comments)

Pay It Forward: It doesn't take much
Yesterday I went to the grocery store to pick up some gift cards and do a little bit of shopping.  After I purchased the gift cards, I got a cart for the few items that I was going to need.  When I went over to where the carts are lined up there was a woman there already struggling to get her cart out.  I saw she needed some help and moved some of the other carts out of her way, so she could get what she needed. Easy enough and she was thankful.

Pay It Forward: Pop Top Tabs III
In early March, Dawn Fabiszak wrote a Pay It Forward post about saving pop can pull tabs for Ronald McDonald house.  I loved this idea.  I've been recycling pop cans (maybe you call them soda cans, depending where you live, I used to call them soda cans too) for years, however I've alway just pocketed the few dollars that I got from recycling.  I was doing a good thing~recycling, but for my own benefit!
Dawn's post inspired me to start saving the pop can pull tabs (pop tops, she calls them) for Ronald McDonald … (13 comments)

Pay It Forward: Volunteering for the Arthritis Foundation
At the end of March, I attended training for the 9Health Fair.  During the training and orientation, we were given a list of other volunteer opportunities.  I reviewed the list carefully and I filled out my volunteer availability form, but I wanted to be more proactive about volunteering.  I contacted the Volunteer & Programs Manager to schedule a meeting to chat about available opportunities.
I met with Jill (Volunteer & Programs Manager) of the local Arthritis Foundation office on Tuesday of this week.  We chatted for nearly an hour about the mission of … (2 comments)

Pay It Forward: Taking Emma for a Walk
We have a new listing that isn't too far from our office (or our house, for that matter).  The seller has a very sweet dog, Emma.  Our seller is sure that Emma was abused in the past and she told us that Emma has a fear of men.  Our seller works during the week, so naturally she's worried about having Emma alone in the house when we have showings.  Hmmm, how are we going to solve this problem?  We want the potential buyers to have the opportunity to see the WHOLE house and … (19 comments)

Pay It Forward: 9Health Fair Training
The first 9Health Fair was held in 1980, with support from the Lions Clubs of Colorado, the Colorado National Guard and hundreds of volunteers.  In 1987 the 9Health Fair became a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.  Focused on health awareness and education, the 9Health Fair offers free and low-cost medical screenings in a variety of locations across the state.  For more information about the history and accomplishments of the 9Health Fair please visit their website.
The Rocky Mountain Chapter of the Arthritis Foundation will play an active role in this year's 9Health Fair.  With the help of volunteers, … (0 comments)

Pay It Forward: Supporting a Local Youth Band
It's pretty common place to support the children of your adult friends and family members.  You buy a variety of items to help with school fundraisers, you purchase girl scout cookies and boy scout popcorn, you attend sporting events and dance recitals. My good friend Nanci has two sons who happen to be in a band with another teenager from their neighborhood.  We've heard them play at Nanci's house and we enjoy their enthusiasm and their music.  Recently they had a chance to play at an open mic night at a local bar … (15 comments)

Pay It Forward: Pop Top Tabs II
Motivated by Dawn Fabiszak's post Pay It Forward-Pop Top Tabs, I started collecting soda can pop top tabs!  We've been saving soda cans at home and in our office for years and years.  We usually take our cans to the local grocery store (King Soopers) to recycle.  I don't know what happens to the cans after we drop them off.  I just know they are recycled.
When I read Dawn's post and learned that the tabs that she collects benefit Ronald McDonald house, I decided that I like knowing who benefits from the recycling!  … (10 comments)

pay it forward: Eating Pancakes for Charity - 03/01/11 02:41 PM
Does it get any easier?  Eating Pancakes for Charity.
It was a supreme sacrifice, but hubby and I made time this morning to go IHOP (International House of Pancakes) to support the Children's Miracle Network.  How did we do that, you might ask?  Well today was IHOP National Pancake Day.
To celebrate, each "guest" receives one complimentary short stack of pancakes.  In return, we are asked to give a donation to the Children's Miracle Network.  Last year IHOP raised $2.1 billion.
Thanks to Ed Silva who brought this wonderful event to my attention via his blog post earlier this week.

Sometimes It's OK to Toot Your Own Horn
I learned some time ago that it's OK to toot your own horn.  It's not an easy thing to do and for some folks it's down right uncomfortable.  In this case it's necessary.  Several months ago I joined a very active group on the ActiveRain network - The Pay It Forward Accountability Group.  The focus of this group is to report weekly about a Pay It Forward activity that occurred during the week.  It's simple really.  Do a good deed for another and then report to the group.
Sounds like tooting your own … (14 comments)

Pay It Forward: Just Pull Forward
Typically when I'm stopped at a traffic light I like to have a bit of space between me and the car in front of me.  Yesterday, on my way to drop off shirts at the dry cleaners, I was stopped at an intersection.  At this particular intersection there are 2 left hand turn lanes, 2 straight lanes and 1 right turn lane.  Unfortunately the right turn lane is not very long.  So often times someone who wants to turn right has to wait for the light to change to green so that the straight traffic … (15 comments)

Pay It Forward: Recycle Dry Cleaning Hangers
These days most clothes are wash and wear, not as many dry cleaning only items.  Plus business attire has changed, you don't see as many suits and dresses.  Now we have casual business attire.  Rich and I still have a few items that we take to our neighborhood dry cleaners.  Mostly shirts, some slacks and a few jackets.
We have a "collection" of wire, dry cleaning hangers that we keep in the closet.  When we get to 30-40 hangers, we'll take them back to the dry cleaners so that they can be used again!  … (22 comments)

KW Cares Chili  Cook-Off Fundraiser
We had our First Annual KW Cares Chil Cook-Off on Friday, January 28th.  The weather was lovely, warm and sunny!
We had 12 chilis officially entered for judging.  We had mostly red chilis, a few white chilis, and some a bit spicy.  Our "celebrity" judges ~ Bob Baker, Operations Fire Chief of South Metro Fire Department, Dave Hickey with Fidelity Title Company (Parker Office) and Dan Rodriguez, the newly hired Director for the Parker Chamber of Commerce ~ did a fine job of tasting and judging all of our entries.  Steve Blair of BB Property Inspections was … (12 comments)

A Chance to Pay It Forward:  Joining the Local Rotary
A good friend joined the local Rotary club a few years ago.  She's been talking to us about joining and to be honest, I've mostly been tuning her out.  To me it was just another networking group.  I'm not really interested in joining a networking group.
Recently, my friend asked me again about coming to the club's meeting.  They meet EVERY week for lunch on Wednesdays.  This time I asked her more questions about "why would I want to go" and "what is it that Rotary does".  Wow, was I surprised.  … (7 comments)

Pay It Forward: Meals for our Friends!
When I had major surgery 2 years ago, agents in our office offered to make meals for us.  I'm very independent and hate to ask for help, but sometimes you need to say "yes, thank you".  Having meals prepared every other day was such a blessing.  Rich had his hands full taking care of our business and me, he didn't need the added stress of grocery shopping, preparing meals and cleaning the kitchen!
On Monday, our friend had knee replacement surgery.  His wife, also our friend, is an agent in our office.  Time to … (17 comments)

If I had $220 in savings...
I've thought LONG and HARD about what to do with an extra $220.  There so many wonderful things that I could do.  I really want to do something that would have a long term impact.  I've thought about giving it to various charities, however I wanted to do something different.  So here's what I came up with!

I would purchase 220 $1 scratch-off lottery tickets.  What am I going to do with all those lottery tickets?  Well, I would give them away, of course!  But to whom you might ask.  I would give them to some … (8 comments)
