pennsylvania: Homeowners - Don't Be A Statistic - 11/10/07 11:12 PM
Two events locally this past week and the onset of Winter weather inspired me to write this blog post -
In the Harrisburg area, two small children were killed, another is still hospitalized and the parents are in custody because:The electric to the home was terminated because of non payment. The family was using candles for lighting one evening last week when a candle caused a fire which spread through the house. Further investigation revealed that the interior of the home was basically a pigsty and the parents have been detained because of a fear they would flee the area.

pennsylvania: B'ars and Bars and Bears - 10/29/07 06:10 AM
It's October 29 and hockey season is already 3 weeks old. I guess the warm temperatures don't matter to true hockey fans.
Central Pennsylvania has it's own hockey tradition, the Hershey Bears have been a part of the American Hockey League since 1936 and have earned eight Calder Cup trophies in the last 70 years, including the 2005-2006 season. They play now in the new Giant Center, but played for almost 70 years in the venerable HersheyPark Arena built in 1936. That has been the site of lot of memories, including Wilt Chamberlain's 100 point performance for the Philadelphia Warriors back in the 60's. While … (1 comments)

pennsylvania: More Good Local Restaurants in Hershey - 07/27/07 05:00 AM
Yesterday I wrote about some of the really good local restaurants that we have patronized right here in Hershey. All are locally owned and operated and I'm using this to bring some more to your attention:
Demarco's is located at 202 West Chocolate Avenue. With a name like Demarco's you know they specialize in Italian favorites and they are open for dinner Monday thru Saturday.
Dimitri's Restaurant and Lounge is located at 1311 East Chocolate Avenue here in Hershey. Dimitri's specializes in Greek cuisine and has a booming lounge business after dinner hours.
Lucy's Cafeis located at 267 West Chocolate Avenue and is open for … (0 comments)

pennsylvania: Local Restaurants in Hershey - 07/26/07 05:42 AM
There are quite  a few fine locally owned and operated restaurants here is Hershey that offer good value and fine dining:
The Campbelltown Cafe is located on US Rte 322 (Governor Road) about 3 miles east of town. Even though it's named for a nearby town, it actually is here in Derry Township. The restaurant is open from 7AM to 8PM weekdays and 9PM weekends. For dinner, all entrees are priced below $20 and the food is terrific.
Fire Alley is located at 1144 Cocoa Avenue (Rte 743) about a mile or so south of the center of town. The restaurant is open 11:30 AM to … (1 comments)

pennsylvania: Goods News For Buyers and Sellers in Pennsylvania - 07/12/07 12:47 AM
As reported this week in the Harrisburg Patriot-News, the proposal to raise the state portion of the Real Estate Transfer tax from 1% to 1.9% is not part of the fiscal 2007-2008 budget approved this week. The Pennsylvania Association of Realtors has vigorously opposed this measure since it was first proposed last Fall. The state Transportation Funding and Reform Commission has proposed this to increase revenue funding for additional mass-transportation funding.
In most places in Pennsylvania, the Real Estate Transfer tax is 2%, with 1% going to the state and 1% to the local municipality. Generally each party to the transaction pay 1%.

pennsylvania: Antique Automobile Club of America - Headquartered in Hershey - 07/11/07 07:30 AM
The Antique Automobile Club of America is located here in Hershey.
The business office is located on Governor Road near the Hershey Motor Lodge and Milton Hershey Medical Center. The club was founded in 1931 and now has over 400 local chapters.
The club also has built a museum located on Museum Drive just outside of Hershey off Rte 39 in South Hanover Township. At the present time, their featured exhibit is America at Speed and has vintage competition vehicles from 1895 to 1990. My favorites are a sprint car driven by Jan Opperman in the 1970's and 80's and Harry Gant's Skoal Bandit … (0 comments)

pennsylvania: Preserving Our Farmland - 07/11/07 06:04 AM
In 1989, the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture recognized that farmland in Pennsylvania was slowly giving way to development and with the legislature, started a program to preserve farm acreage in Pennsylvania.
Under the program the state and individual counties purchase development rights from the landowner. In exchange for giving up their development rights, the landowner is compensated which allows the landowner to continue to farm the land.
So far, this program has preserved about 2300 farms which is just over one quarter million acres. The state presently has a waiting list of about 1300 additional farm properties that have applied for this program and … (0 comments)

pennsylvania: Pennsylvania is Open Today - 07/09/07 10:59 PM
The state legislative and executive branches resolved all of their budget issues about 11PM last night and effective today. All of the state services that were suspended yesterday should be back in business today.
That means you can visit a state park, take car of auto registration or driver license business or visit a state museum or library.
Hopefully, when budget time comes in 2008, there will not be a partisan impasse and the state will not experience this kind of shutdown.

pennsylvania: Pennsylvania is Closed Today - 07/08/07 11:50 PM
Well, not completely.
The failure of the legislature to approve a budget for fiscal 2007-2008 has resulted in the state government "furloughing" about 25,000 employees they deemed as "non essential".
Among those services not available today are all of the state parks (except 3 managed by private firms), the Department of Transportation auto registration and driver's license services and all state run museums and libraries.
This was supposed to close all casinos, since there are state employees assigned to every casino to monitor the activities. The casino lobby went to a judge who granted a stay so the casinos will remain open.
The end result, … (3 comments)

pennsylvania: Have A Great Holiday - By The Way Monday You're Laid Off - 07/04/07 05:08 AM
That's the message about 26,000 Commonwealth of Pennsylvania employees received on July 3, except the state calls it "furloughed".
Every couple of years the elected officials who "run" the state government seem to have this outcome. By law. the fiscal year budget must be approved by June 30. If it is not approved, there is no money to run any of the state services. And every couple of years, some kind of political wrangling results in an outcome of no budget approval and no money to run the government services.
Effective next Monday (July 9), about 27 or 28% of the state … (2 comments)

pennsylvania: Welcome To Hershey - 05/27/07 01:26 AM
Many years ago, the words "Welcome To Hershey" were spelled out on the hill in front of Senior Hall at the Milton Hershey School. Over the years, they had become sorely unattended and finally were removed back in the early 1970's.
To celebrate 100 years of the Hershey Kiss and Hershey Park, the school decided to redo the letters this year. The school provided the labor to dig out the area and volunteer groups worked in one hour shifts to replicate the original sign. These groups included civic organizations, school groups and interested community residents and business people.
The result is displayed in … (5 comments)

pennsylvania: Anger Levels Rise in Hershey - 03/04/07 04:06 AM
There is an increased level of anger locally over the announcement by the Hershey Company that there may be job losses in manufacturing and perhaps other segments in the company business locally.
There was a rally yesterday attended by over 200 people in support of the workers and insupport of retaining these jobs locally. Among those in attendance was a Dauphin County commissioner as well as several local government elected officials. The company was not represented.
Here is a link to one article: http://tinyurl.com/246k26
One interesting attendee is not mentioned in the article. The daughter of H.B. Reese attended to support keeping manufacturing locally with … (0 comments)

pennsylvania: More to Rant About - 02/17/07 02:42 AM
After posting yesterday (My Turn to Rant) I was utterly amazed this morning when I left to go to Harrisburg that no additional ice and snow removal had occurred in the area.
And the state still has not opened Interstate 78 or Interstate 81 for traffic. This event ended on Wednesday afternoon. We had our driveway cleared by 5PM on Wednesday. If two senior citizens can clear a double wide driveway by hand, certainly heavy equipment can clear a highway.
And the governor says he's "embarrassed" by the reports. And the reason, the DOT decided to NOT plow on Tuesday evening because the … (0 comments)
