customer service: No, No No, Thank You!

This can be considered a throw away post, but I thought someone might find it useful. On Saturday, I had an inspection for a Vietnamese client. After we had finished going over the report, I said thank you in Vietnamese, and she smiled broadly. How did you know to say that?! She exclaimed. My son and I will always ask people how to say thank you in their native tongue, and we try to remember it then. We are not always successful (Turkish has two forms for our thank you, and I still do not remember either one), but it is (12 comments)
customer service: The Wonders of the Automated Phone

I was just paying my invoice for my Supra Key by going through the automated phone system. I love how technology can make our lives easier, so I do not mind going through some steps on an automated system if it means getting through it all faster, since I do not have to wait to speak to a live representative. However GE's system caused me to wince. After pressing the appropriate number for my option, I felt that I had hit the wrong number, only to find it was a safeguard on their part. This past week my sixteen month old daughter has been home sick. Since I office out of my home, I thought that I could get a little work done. Thankfully, because of the holiday, I did not have too much to do. However, each evening, this little bundle of energy took her mother to my desk. My daughter, Katya, had my wife help her into my seat, where she proceeded to turn on the computer, flip through the rollidex, speak on the phone, shove papers into the printer, and generally made a nice mess in her attempts to explore what I (6 comments)
